Display Troubleshooting: ATI Radeon

These instructions are for computers that have AMD/ATI Radeon graphics hardware.

To complete these instructions you must know:

  1. The card manufacturer. This page is for ATI Technologies cards.
  2. The video card model. These recommendations are for Radeon cards.
  3. The operating system of the computer. Which Windows operating system am I running?

If you are not sure of any of these, please go to our Video Troubleshooting section for more instructions.

If you are running a Radeon card, the latest drivers are buggy. Because of this, you have two choices to proceed.

  1. If anti-aliasing is on, Radeon cards cannot hide edges properly. If the objects look transparent, not solid, turn off anti-aliasing in Rhino. This will get the model to shade properly.
  2. A second option is to download and install the drivers from January 2014. Many of the problems occur after this date. See below for instructions.
Warning!
It is possible to install the wrong driver for your graphics card and operating system. This causes many problems. Be very sure you are downloading and installing the correct driver for your system.

Before updating your video drivers we recommend creating a system restore point on your computer.

Update your video driver:

  1. Close Rhino.
  2. Get updated video drivers.
    1. Laptop: Get updated drivers from the laptop maker's web site.
    2. Mac: Get Bootcamp updates from Apple.
  3. Select the graphics card make and model and the Windows operating system you're using.
  4. On the right side of the page, click on the option Download Previous Drivers & Software.
  5. Download the suggested driver installer. For Radeon these are drivers from December 2013 or January 2014. For most people this will be driver 13.12.
  6. Run the installer.
  7. Restart your computer if prompted to do so.
  8. Open Rhino to test if you have fixed your problem.

Is the problem solved?

I followed the steps in the Video Troubleshooting wizard and determined that my computer has an AMD graphics system. I have updated my AMD video driver.
