Summary: The newest Rhino 4 is “Large Address Aware”. By making a small change in the C:\BOOT.INI file or in the BCD store, you can increase the memory available to Rhino from 2GB to 3GB.
Warning: Many technical support documents from Microsoft warn that the changes described below are ill-advised for most situations. Make these changes with extreme caution and be prepared to reverse them in the event of problems. Use this information at your own risk.
Update: 4 Nov 2007 - Recently, a Rhino user running dual screens on an ATI fireGL 5200 w/256, reported scrambled display problems. After trying many other things, he eventually determined that switching back from 3GB to 2GB resolved the problem. - JB
Update 2: 4 Dec 2007 - After setting the /3GB switch on my own WinXP Pro system, I began having problems getting MSIE7 to exit reliably. I ran this way for several months and recently removed the /3GB switch from the Boot.ini file. My problems with MSIE7 have gone away. - JB
Add the /3GB parameter in your C:\Boot.ini file at end of this line and reboot:

Note: To avoid further confusion that by default, the Windows File Explorer does not display “Hidden system files” like C:\BOOT.INI. You need to adjust your folder options to find the file, then change its properties to remove the “read only” attribute before adding the “/3GB” switch to the start options. After making the change, you should make C:\BOOT.INI a read-only file again, then reboot the system to make the change take effect.
In Windows Vista
C:\Boot.ini has been replaced with the Boot Configuration Data Store
BCDEDIT /export “C:\BCD Backup” - Makes a backup of your original settings
BCDEDIT /set increaseuserva 3072 - Changes the memory setting
Note: In Windows Vista the BCDEDIT utility is used to first export and then modify the BCD store. BCDEDIT is a command line utility and is run from a CMD Window.
Operating systems based on Microsoft® Windows NT® technologies have always provided applications with a flat 32-bit virtual address space that describes 4 gigabytes (GB) of virtual memory.
The address space is usually split so that 2 GB of address space is directly accessible to the application and the other 2 GB is only accessible to the Windows executive software.
In response to customer requests, Microsoft Windows XP Professional provides applications with a 3-GB flat virtual address space, with the kernel and executive components using only 1 GB.
The virtual address space of processes and applications is still limited to 2 GB unless the /3GB switch is used in the Boot.ini file.
The /3GB switch allocates 3 GB of virtual address space to an application that uses IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE in the process header. This switch allows applications to address 1 GB of additional virtual address space above 2 GB.
If after adding the /3GB switch to boot.ini, you find upon rebooting that your video driver is not working properly (you're stuck with the VgaSave fall-back driver), adding the /USERVA switch as well may be the fix, for example:
/3GB /USERVA=2800

Also, when modifying boot.ini, we advise you to include your changes as a second copy of the OS, so that if your changes are unsuccessful you can simply choose your original configuration on bootup. Here's an example Windows XP Pro boot.ini which might be useful while testing the /3GB & /USERVA switches:
