Troubleshooting FARO USB Digitizer Connection Problems

For Rhino 3.0/4.0

If you are having trouble getting Rhino 3.0 or Rhino 4.0 SR9 connected to your FARO USB arm, please follow these steps:

  1. Close Rhino.
  2. Turn off the FARO arm.
  3. Unplug the FARO arm from your computer.
  4. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
  5. Double-click Add and Remove Programs.
  6. Select FARO Arm USB Driver and click Remove. Fully remove the FARO USB Driver. Be sure all copies of the FARO USB Driver are removed.
  7. Restart your computer.
  8. Select your Rhino version:
  9. Install the FARO USB drivers you just downloaded.
  10. Restart your computer.
  11. Connect the FARO USB cable to your computer.
  12. Turn on the FARO USB arm.
  13. The Windows New Hardware Wizard will run. Follow the steps on the screen to install the driver.
  14. When the wizard completes successfully, start Rhino.
  15. From the Tools menu, click 3D Digitizer, then click Connect.
  16. At the Select Digitizer prompt, click the Digitizer option.
  17. At the Digitizer prompt, click FARO USB Digitizer.
  18. Follow the instructions to connect your digitizer.

Verify that you have the latest Rhino 4 SR9.

Problem

Symptom

At step 13 above, when you plug in the USB and power on the arm, Windows New Hardware Wizard does not run. If you look at Windows Device Manager, FARO is listed as an unknown device and the Update Device option also fails.

  1. Download the latest USB drivers from FARO. Or try this direct link.
